ANTI-RAGGING COMMITTEE

Anti-Ragging Committee has been functioning in Hajee Karutha Rowther Howdia College as one of the student support services. Ragging is considered as an unfortunate act practised in the higher educational institutions.

The Act of Ragging

  • Display of noisy disorderly conduct, doing any act which causes or is likely to cause physical or psychological harm or raise apprehension of fear or share or embarrassment to a student.

  • Teasing, abusing or playing practical jokes on or causing injury to any student.

  • Asking a student to do any act or perform something which such haven't will not willing do.

Being an act, harming students physically and psychologically it has been banned in the educational institutions. To this effect the Government of Tamil Nadu has passed an ordinance called Tamil Nadu Ordinance No. 10 – Prohibition of Ragging in Educational Institutions, 1996. According to it, whoever commits, participates in abets or propagates ragging will be punished.

Rigorous imprisonment for a period of two years with a penalty of Rs 10,000 and immediate expulsion from the educational institution without any enquiry and with no provision for joining any other institution are the punishments given to those students who are indulged in ragging.

To ensure the campus of Hajee Karutha Rowther Howdia College as Ragging Free Campus, an Anti-Ragging Committee has been formed in the college.

Functions of Anti-Ragging Committee
The committee has pasted stickers bearing the ordinance of Government of Tamil Nadu banning the ragging in the educational institutions. Further, the committee has installed green coloured boxes in every building, for receiving complaints against ragging.

The members of the committee, together periodically check the boxes, to find out whether any complaints are dropped. If any complaints are found, the members swing in to actions. The committee also watches places of the campus to find out whether ragging takes place on the campus. The committee now has a proposal to register the institution in the Anti-ragging website opened by the Human Resource Development Ministry and to conduct Anti-Ragging awareness programmed in the campus.

Joint efforts are made by the teachers, parents and students to eradicate ragging. Therefore, evils effects and punishments of ragging are informed to the students and parents in the orientation programme conducted for the first years students on their first day of entry into the college. As directed by the Anti-Ragging Committee, instructions against are given to the students in the Moral Instructions Classes and Deeniyath Classes also.
