As globalization has turned real, and now that it is futile any more to fight it off, our task is to equip ourselves to ride its waves. With more and more people, especially the younger generation on the move internationally, it is the competency in English language that is to be their buoy. The way in which English is still growing in leaps and bounds is a glorious testimony to the fact that there seems to be no set back at all for English. A fairly high degree of proficiency in English and excellent communication skills enhance students’ employability. Hence tremendous efforts are undertaken by the Department of English to hone up the abilities of the students in that international language.
Constituted in the year 1956 at the inception of the college, the Department of English has been the backbone of the college for the past 62 years. One of the oldest and the largest, the department of English reaches out to scores of students from various disciplines, rendering commendable service to the student community. The department was upgraded to a Post Graduate department in 2006.It became a Research Department in 2016 and is equipped with a fine library. The Department takes the credit of having produced four Principals, including the first Principal of the college and the current Principal.
The Department takes particular pride for having secured an indelible reputation for the college under the headship of several cognizant stalwarts. Prof A.K.G.Nair, a man of rare language and literary skill was at the helm of the faculty. His successor Prof. Abdus Subhan followed his footsteps and added name and fame to the Department. The third stalwart who headed the Department was Mr.Ignatius Absalom. He was also the Head of the Institution. Under his expert stewardship, the Department of English began making rapid progress.
Thus it had earned a reputation of excellence which impressed a man like Mr. V.A.Varkey of the American College, Madurai, to join our faculty, who soon assumed the office as the Head of our Department. Prof. Varkey, a man of hard work added another glorious feather to the crown of the Department, by taking steps to introduce B.A. English Major in the year 1979.
His successor Mr. M.Abdul Latif prided himself as an old student of his predecessor. Mr. Abdul Latif’s services really enabled to boost up the percentage of results which still continues as a marvel. Prof. G.Regunathan who succeeded Prof. M.Abdul Latif, was a man of dedication. His studious efforts of motivation culminated in the swelling results which crossed 85%. Prof. I.Mahaboob Nawaz who headed the Department after Mr.G.Regunathan, was a man of dedication and hard work. In fact he was popular as student-friendly, under whose motivation and inspiration our students brought more laurels to the Department.
Prof.A.Allah Baks, who assumed responsibility as the Head of the Department succeeding Prof. I.Mahaboob Nawaz, was also very devoted and hardworking. He strove to carry forward all the achievements of his learned predecessors. Owing to his incessant efforts, the Department was upgraded to a Post Graduate as well as a Research Department.
His successor Dr.H.Mohamed Meeran has assumed office as the Head of the Institution after having completed 25 years of service in teaching in the Department of English. Being a prudent visionary, Dr. H.Mohamed Meeran is committed to modify the institution into a vibrant place of learning and steady progress. He relentlessly aims at providing the best possible opportunities to students to do their best, invest effort into their learning, to showcase their talents, explore their interests and to continually develop new knowledge and skills. Until now, he has been updating his academic knowledge, besides striving to bring more honours to the institution and to make the college surge ahead towards the pinnacle of glory.
Continuing the legacy of success, the incumbent Head of the Department, Dr. J.Ahmed Meeran endeavours to transform the students into balanced, holistic individuals who can combine academic expertise with their creative energies to forge their way forward in today’s competitive world.
The strength of the Department is the highly qualified, competent and dedicated faculty whose primary objective as committed teachers is to constantly upgrade their knowledge as well as enlighten and empower students by keeping them informed of the latest developments in the fields of literature and language. Using both conventional and modern methods, students are trained in acquiring communication skills in the newly established English Language Laboratory.
The Department has been producing meritorious students both in academics and extracurricular activities. The literary club functioning in the department conducts HOWDIA BLISS, an Inter-Collegiate State Level Literary competition every year, to bring out the hidden talents of the students. The students are also encouraged to participate in various Inter-Collegiate competitions organized by other colleges. The Department has been producing excellent result every year with an average of 90% and above continuously. Guided by the proud legacy of the past, the Department of English awaits to meet the challenges that lie ahead in the days to come.
