Economics is a dynamic science – reflecting the shifting trends in economic affairs of the world and the society at large. Often economics appears to be an endless procession of new puzzles, problems and dilemmas. Economics has made many advances in understanding the role of innovation. History shows that economic ideas can produce tidal waves when they are applied to real world problems. The important innovations are the application of economic theories to solve our environmental problems to improve regulatory mechanisms, monetary and measurement of consumer prices.

Economics has increased its scope greatly over the past half-a century. The flag of economics flies over the traditional territory of the market place, but it also covers environment, legal studies, statistical and historical methods, art, gender and racial discrimination and even family life. In total economics opens door to the learners to occupy the positions like teachers in colleges and schools, employees in various Government Departments and in private companies.

The Department of Economics is one of the first Departments started with the establishment of the college in 1956. The Department was first headed by Prof. M. Krishnamoorthy. Many of the faculty members brought credit to the Department by serving as Principals and Vice-principals: Professors N. Nainar Mohamed (1991-99), V. Krishnamoorthy, (1999-2000), and Dr. K. Shahul Hameed (2000-06) as Principals and Prof. K.M. Syed Kalai (1991-98) as Vice-principal.

The contribution made by the former principal Prof. V. Krishnamoorthy and the former Head of the Department Prof. M. Abdul Rahman for the development of the Department is noteworthy. Prof. V. Krishnamoorthy is a notable social activist and is presently the Secretary of “Cumbum Valley Periyar Aayacut Farmers’ Association”, while the latter is a well-known orator in Tamil Nadu and so popular among the Tamil- speaking people living in India and abroad.
