DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY

History is a growing science which records the unique events in the life of mankind. The word history comes ultimately from Ancient Greek ἱστορία (historía), meaning “inquiry”, “knowledge from inquiry”, or exploration of information. The study of history is like visiting stories of far off lands. It presents before us an exciting picture of the events across and through countries. It is the story of the development of human society. To Napoleon it was ‘the only true philosophy and the only true psychology’. It is a branch in which God played the game, while men watched and learned. It is certainly a nerve-taking game to watch and learn. It links the past with the present and enables us to see how man has been discovering to live comfortably and safely.

The study of history is no waste of time or luxury. Francis Bacon rightly observed that “History is a discipline that makes men wise”. From ancient times mankind has recognized the importance of history as a subject of study. It has gained a status of prominence among the different areas of intellectual curiosity.

The people of the East as well as the West christened a historical sense in the remote past. However, it was in the ancient Greece and Rome that history made its beginnings as a definite branch of knowledge. In medieval times religious convictions dominated historical writings. But by the beginning of the modern times, this situation has changed. With the passage of time the scope of history has been widened. Instead of repeating only political events the importance is being given to social, cultural and economic activities.

The History Department has been in existence right from the inception of the college. Initially, History was taught as one of the papers for pre-university course and as an ancillary paper for B.A., Economics course. B.A. History major was started in the year 1968. Prof. K. Sikkandar, the iron man of the college was the first head of the Department. He served as the Principal from 1977-1980 and again from 1988 to 1991. It was under his leadership, our college was established as one of the well disciplined colleges in Madurai Kamaraj University, having introduced the co-education in 1990 successfully. His administrative ability laid the foundation for the name and fame of this institution. Such a great man was succeeded by Prof. R. Pandiaraj, a sage, Guru and Saint of our college. He brought a status for our college through his fluency in English language that was a source of inspiration and instrumental for so many teachers and students to achieve high status in the society.

After the retirement of Prof. R. Pandiaraj, Prof. K. Jeyaram assumed the headship of the Department. He was succeeded by Prof. S. Doraisamy, an alumnus of the Department. He served as a member of the Academic Council and of Board of Studies of the Madurai Kamaraj University. He was succeeded by Prof. P. Khaja Mohideen who is also an alumnus of our college.
